Overview

Water & Air scientists and engineers produced a Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan for the Veterans Administration Hospital, Gainesville, FL. The Plan is a requirement based on the amount of stored oil products and compliance with federal hospital policies. It outlined precautions, protocols, and reactions to the storage of oil products at the facility; and provided guidance to workers who are in contact with oil products. The Plan components were reviewed in an instructional setting with appropriate personnel including onsite review of specific facility and site features. Amendments to the Plan were made when additional storage units were added at the facility.

Task Summary

  • Researched historical information.
  • Evaluated use and storage of oil at the property.
  • Prepared an easy-to-use document that can be used in an emergency or for spill and leak prevention strategies.
  • Provided guidance with oil product handling issues.

Results

A SPCC Plan was written and implemented at the facility; it is in use today to aid VA personnel in preventing an environmental contamination and hazards; and to minimize affects on human health in the event of a spill-related emergency.
